How To Store Macarons Like A Pro!

Updated: Oct 28, 2020

You have finally perfected making your macarons, but how to store them if you have too much on hand? In this blog post we’ll share the ways you can keep your macarons fresh.

Store Macarons In Fridge

  • If you make your own macarons, the filled macarons need to be refrigerated for 1 day before consumption. This is called maturation where osmosis process happens, which makes the middle of the macarons become more chewy and creamy. Try to store the macarons in the fridge as soon as the macarons are filled.

  • If you think you will consume the #macarons in a day or so, its ok to leave the macarons on the counter. Otherwise, it should be stored in the fridge. As always, the sooner the macarons are consumed, the better they taste.

  • Some say they can store the macarons in the freezer up to 6 months. However, realistically because most families' freezers have many other items like leftover pizzas or frozen meats, the smells of those items might creep into your macarons over time. Another reason I wouldn't recommend it is because they are a lot of heavy frozen items in the freezer which might crush the macarons accidentally in a crowded freezer.

Timing

  • If you bake your own macarons, please allow the macarons to cool down after baking.

  • Try to store the macarons in the fridge as soon as the macarons are filled.

Choice Of Containers

  • Macarons are very fragile, so its best to use a sturdy container that is not easily crushed. This means plastic bag is not a good choice.

  • Airtight containers are best. I would recommend glass or plastic.

  • If you have to stack the macarons, its best to put a parchment paper between the layers.

Moisture Is Your Enemy

  • Make sure the container is clean and dry. Otherwise, the macarons will become soggy.

  • Try to store the macarons in the middle of your fridge where moisture and temperature level does not vary as much. Temperature at the door fluctuates quite a bit, so it is not an ideal candidate!

Consume At Room Temperature

Just like a cake, the fillings of the macarons become solid as time when they are stored in the fridge. So, for the best consumption experience, it is best to take the macarons out of the fridge beforehand, and let them come to room temperature before consumption. It usually takes about 30 minutes. Time to make tea or coffee to enjoy your macarons!
